Is your wallet ready for all the back to school shopping?

Isn’t it amazing how quickly the summer goes by? Most of us can’t believe another summer is coming to a close.  Does packing away the summer gear and starting to shop for all the new school necessities cause you to panic?  Back to school shopping can be a nerve racking event both for you and your child.  First you have school supplies, notebooks, pencils etc.  Then you have the clothes and shoes.  For your child it is all about what looks perfect, the perfect pants, shirt, hair cut.  Even their notebooks have to look just right.  And if they’re like most kids, they have no concept of what any of it costs.

And so the battle begins; you fighting for what you can afford and your child fighting for what they feel they “have to have”.  Denying a child causes most parents to panic; will they forever be scarred if they don’t have the name brand shoes?  Will they be bullied if they dress a certain way?

To ease the financial strain of back to school shopping some people consider finding a way to earn money at home. There are quite a few realistic options depending on how much extra money you need to make.


  • Ebay and Amazon- Both Ebay and Amazon are fantastic ways to sporadically earn money at home. Take a look around your house gather up all the things you no longer need and list them for sale online. If you need a quick boost of cash, this may be a good option for you.
  • Craigslist or Local Classifieds- Any item that won’t ship easily (car seats, strollers, pack and plays etc) is a great candidate for Craigslist or Classified Ads. Craigslist is in most major cities and is typically free. There are categories for everything and the site is very user-friendly. Classifieds ads in your newspaper do charge a small fee but there are people who shop the classifieds so you might find it worthwhile. Like ebay, you will run out of things to sell in your house fairly quickly so this is a good option for a quick boost of cash.
  • Amateur Photography- There are several websites you can submit digital pictures to (isotck.com is a big one). Advertisers frequently visit these sites when they need images for their ads. Anytime one of your pictures is downloaded you receive a royalty. This is a viable option if you like taking pictures and aren’t looking for tons of money.
  • Home Business- If you are looking for more reliable income source consider a work from home business. With a home based business you set your own schedule and work only when it is convenient for you. This is the best option if you are looking for year round income.
